My first car was an early ’80s Volvo with a bald front tire. The only tech it had inside was a radio and a heater and I felt pretty fortunate that both were working. One of the most commonly asked question is about mains electrical compatibility. Every American has experienced the frustration of trying to use 110V chargers overseas. and having concern when plugging into 240V mains sockets. So a lot of customers wonder if Chinese electronics are somehow on a strange foreign system that is not compatible. Well, not at all – first of all, the whole of China is on standard 220-240V mains electricity. It also uses EU and UK type plugs everywhere. Although we would not go so far to say electrical plugs in China are standard – much like many other things here.
OK, hands up, if your car ran out of battery and you had to give it a boost, would you know which jump leads go where? If not, this gadget could be your saving grace. The vehicle-to-vehicle booster works in a similar way to common jump leads – in that it transfers battery power from one car to another. However, instead of lifting up the bonnet, you can just connect this device to both cars’ 12V DC sockets (the cigarette lighter socket) and a few minutes later your car will be raring to go. The lead itself is six meters – easily long enough to stretch between two cars.
On the education side, Blipblox was one of the more interesting items on the floor. A synth designed for three to eight-year-old kids, the Blipblox has arrow paths on top connecting all the buttons to show the synth’s signal chain. The idea is to get children interested in synthesis basics early on. But, there’s no iconography on the Blipblox itself to hint at what the buttons do, so it’s hard to say how much kids will really learn as opposed to just mashing buttons. The company told me that if kids want to learn more, they can read the manual that comes with it, but that seems to defeat the product’s purpose.
All vehicles have that standard cigarette lighter power socket. With this you can plug power cables into your car gadgets. It’s a standard 12V on all vehicles so don’t worry about compatibility. If you are charging/powering many electronic appliances from one car socket, buy a good car accessory power splitter. Be careful not to overload the car’s electrical system with too many products plugged in at the same time.

As a little aside, there were a couple companies that were trying to tackle the combination of music and VR. Aerodrums, a company that allows you to drum without a drum set, has just introduced a VR component. Aerodrums works with traditional drum sticks that have reflective balls at the tip and reflective panels that are attached to your feet. A camera then captures any movements made, allowing you to drum without a physical kit (and, when fed into headphones, without making any noise!). The new upgrade takes this same format but now allows for more immersive drumming using a VR headset. Some drumming pros I spoke to said that although they might not use the VR component themselves, they could see it being incredibly useful for beginners, and as a tool for delivering drum lessons. This was the overall vibe I got from most VR experiences — perhaps fun for beginners, but in terms of a viable alternative for pros, not quite there yet (or maybe just not needed).
