Kryptonite:[53] Batman keeps a chunk of kryptonite (in some stories, a ring with a kryptonite gem) in his belt in a lead lined compartment in order to take down any hostile Kryptonians. In the Justice League TV series Batman calls his kryptonite insurance, but in some continuities Superman himself gives the kryptonite to him, as a sign of trust.

Motorola’s Dynatac 8000x was the first truly portable cellphone when it launched in 1984. Marty Cooper, an engineer with Motorola at the time, first demonstrated the technology by making what’s regarded as the first public cellular phone call from a New York City sidewalk in 1973. (It was both a PR stunt and an epic humblebrag: Cooper called his biggest rival at AT&T.) The Dynatac 8000x weighed nearly two pounds and cost almost $4,000.
This picture isn’t of one super-long screen, it’s three screens next to each other. The bezels are hidden, though, by Asus’ new antibezel kit. It uses lenses to refract the content on the screen edges at a 130-degree angle — essentially using a sort of stealth technology to hide them.
A computer game supposedly invented by Maximillian Largo, for two players, who sit at either end of a large console with a screen in the middle. For each game, the computer will randomly select a country and assign an amount of US dollars to it. The country will then be the battlefield for the game, and each player (one fighting for red, the other fighting for blue) must shoot at the lit target on the map, to colour it in their colour and score points, before their opponent. However, the players have another weapon: the left joystick controls two nuclear missiles (similar in design to the cruise missiles featured earlier in the film), whilst the right joystick controls a shield to destroy the missiles. If a player is hit by the missiles, their opponent wins the round. The game also has a sinister features, wherein the loser of each round is electrocuted; furthermore, if a player lets go of the joysticks, their opponent automatically wins the round. As the game continues, the amount of money assigned to each country increases, as does the level of electricity administered to the loser by the computer.
Cigar? Cigarette? Camera? Smoking may be out of vogue, but spy cameras never go out of style. So this may be the perfect stocking stuffer for the spy in your life. The digital images can be downloaded to a computer via USB cable.
Yesterday was press day at CES, but now the show floor is open and the gadgets are spilling out all over the place. Here’s a rundown of some of the coolest new stuff to debut. Click here to see yesterday’s roundup!
As the sound of plucked koto strings echoes through the hall, the assistant jingles gold bells over my head. I’m told to approach the altar and am given a tree branch, an offering to the shrine’s deities. A priest painstakingly instructs me to turn the branch 180 degrees—no, no, clockwise—and place it on the altar. Then bow deeply twice—that’s good—and clap twice.
Still, at CES, carmakers like Ford, Hyundai, BMW and Audi are expected to show off the latest improvements to self-driving tech, like smarter parking assistance and less error-prone collision avoidance. These are baby steps toward truly driverless vehicles, but some features may appear in cars in the coming years.

Near the shrine’s entryway is what looks like an old-school arcade attraction. Inside is a shishigashira, or lion head puppet. Drop some yen in this coin-op device to see the mechanical lion do its festive Shinto dance that wards off evil. When the shimmying is over, an omikuji, or fortune, drops down the chute. The fortune, printed on a rolled-up piece of paper, could just as easily be terrible as great. I’m afraid to use the thing — one more bit of bad luck and my cell phone might spontaneously combust in my pocket.
The Regency’s pocket radio was the first consumer gadget powered by transistors, ushering in an age of high-tech miniaturization. A post-WWII innovation developed by Texas Instruments (which had been making devices for the Navy) and Industrial Development Engineering Associates (which previously put out television antennas for Sears), the $49.95, 3-by-5-inch, battery-powered portable was built on technology developed by Bell Labs. From the transistors that amplified the radio signal to the use of printed circuit boards that connected the components to the eye-catching design, many factors conspired to make the TR-1 a holiday must-buy after its November 1954 launch. And as revolutionary as all this tech was, it only scratches the surface of how the Regency — by ushering in truly portable communications — changed the world overnight.
One of the very best things about a conceptual device is the fact that you can more or less throw in every single bit of technological advancement into the picture, knowing that it does not even have to wait for existing technology and laws of physics to be able to allow it to do so. Vivo has thought of the APEX FullView concept smartphone, which will boast of the world’s very first half-screen in-display fingerprint scanning technology that is merged with other kinds of engineering breakthroughs in its camera, speaker and sensors.
One of the improvised gadgets used by Bond. First he uses this item to subdue an attacker by using it as a club while the umbrella is closed, then later to slow his descent of a high jump by opening the umbrella and using it as a mini parachute.
The base also acts as a nightlight and sound system. It plays music and displays ambient light to create moods to get you to sleep or to wake up. You can also play music from your smartphone apps through the integrated speakers. If you’re already in the Withings ecosystem, it pipes your sleep data into HealthMate, and either way it has its own dedicated app to view your snoozes.
“It could be foundational to the next generation of advancements,” said Greg Roberts, an executive at Accenture, a tech consulting firm. “You’re going to see more talk around the potential of 5G to remove the barriers around bandwidth.”
