We all know that riding a motorbike can be a very exhilarating experience, when you have the cool breeze flying in your face as you zip by a gridlock of vehicles. Well, it goes without saying that wearing a helmet is of utmost importance in terms of safety, since your skull might be hard enough to handle some minor knocks, but a full-on collision? Good luck with that. Sena and Shoei have decided to bring together their respective fields of expertise by unveiling the Neotec II, an all-new motorbike helmet that is for communications while you are on the road.

It may look like your average laptop, but there’s no Intel inside. Instead, there’s a slot where the touchpad would normally be for you to dock Razer’s own Android-powered phone. Now you’ve got a Frankenstein’s monster with the phone as the brain — serving up its processor, operating system and apps — in the body of a Blade Stealth laptop.

This picture isn’t of one super-long screen, it’s three screens next to each other. The bezels are hidden, though, by Asus’ new antibezel kit. It uses lenses to refract the content on the screen edges at a 130-degree angle — essentially using a sort of stealth technology to hide them.

In 2017, the cinema camera making company RED announced it was working a smartphone with a holographic screen. Consumers were unsure what this meant until September 2017. Essentially, the phone would provide a 3D viewing experience on screen, projecting things like buildings and landscapes in an interactive map. A user could essentially take a virtual tour via the phone screen, looking around, above, behind, or in-between various objects.

The RED smart phone is currently available for pre-order, for the fairly hefty price tag of $1,195. No official release date has been announced, but the company says users can expect to see the product sometime in early 2018.

As a little aside, there were a couple companies that were trying to tackle the combination of music and VR. Aerodrums, a company that allows you to drum without a drum set, has just introduced a VR component. Aerodrums works with traditional drum sticks that have reflective balls at the tip and reflective panels that are attached to your feet. A camera then captures any movements made, allowing you to drum without a physical kit (and, when fed into headphones, without making any noise!). The new upgrade takes this same format but now allows for more immersive drumming using a VR headset. Some drumming pros I spoke to said that although they might not use the VR component themselves, they could see it being incredibly useful for beginners, and as a tool for delivering drum lessons. This was the overall vibe I got from most VR experiences — perhaps fun for beginners, but in terms of a viable alternative for pros, not quite there yet (or maybe just not needed).

Aside from checking out the newest pro-level gear in areas like DJing, speakers, and headphones, there were two categories that caught my attention at NAMM. They were products that tackled music education and gadgets that were third-party add-ons for instruments and hardware people already own.
